Beside An Ocean Of Sorrow
Beside an Ocean of Sorrow opens an
expansive window into the harsh
reality of race crimes committed
during and after the wake of World
War ll, an abandoned child is
discovered by an enslaved domestic
worker named Anele. A quirk of fate
binds Anele to the "white" infant she
names Shiya, the Forsaken One. But
before long, Shiya is forced to leave
the only home she has ever known
and is moved onto a sugar-cane
plantation near the Valley of a
Thousand Hills. There she is kept in
legal bondage by the plantation
owner, her undeclared blood father.
Shiya leads a hellish life until her
father is found guilty of committing
despicable crimes.
Beside an Ocean of Sorrow is based on the lives of real people and
events. To protect certain individuals' privacy and perhaps even their
safety, their names, professions, and descriptions were altered. As the
events in this story unfold, you will see there was good reason for so
going.
Festering in the authors' mind for over sixty years have been the voices
that went unheard, lives not vindicated, and bravery that was
dishonored. At last, they receive their due.
With an author's license, some details were embellished for dramatic
purposes. Beyond such modifying, it's a true if novelized tale.
Of course, Truth, like Beauty, oft' lies in the mind and eyes of the
beholder.
The book cover shows a little girl holding the hand of a black woman
with a Zulu kraal (settlement) in the background. The theme should be a
happy carefree little girl whose life is destined for untold misfortune. But
the testimony of the human spirit to survive those odds - rise above hate
and anger.
